Larger brains, the microbiota-gut-brain axis and impressive brain technology
May 1st, 2024The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that the number of people over the age of 65 who will develop brain disorders, conditions and diseases will at least double in 30 years. However, larger brains, our microbiota-gut-brain axis and impressive brain technology could scupper their projections.
The human brain is getting larger
A recent study by scientists at UC Davis Health found that in the US and elsewhere dementia risk may be decreasing and the potential explanation is the fact that human brains are getting bigger, larger brains are more resilient to degeneration such as dementia which impairs the ability to remember, think or make decisions.
Over the last 35 years, there has been a 13% decline in the incidence rate of dementia per decade in Europe and North America. Scientists revealed that the brains of people born in the 1970s had a higher volume and greater surface area than those born in the 1930s. Through the generations, the brain’s surface has grown by 15% with a 6.6% higher volume – the brain volume is determined by measuring the space within the skull (intracranial volume). Previous research has shown that since 7 million years ago, the human brain has tripled in size.
The connection and interaction between the microbiota-gut-brain axis and the brain
Another study that may affect the projections concerns the connection and interaction between brain health and the gut, otherwise known as the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Evidence suggests that certain types of gut bacteria, primarily lactobacillus and bacillus may influence the thickness of the brain’s cortex. The research revealed that targeting the microbiota-gut-brain with therapeutic interventions may help with neurological and psychiatric disorders. Find out more about the study here. Insert link:
New! Neurotechnology company implants first human brain chip
The brain is getting larger and neurotechnology has made a major advancement. Elon Musk, billionaire and founder of the neurotechnology company Neuralink have done the first-ever brain chip implant into a human. The brain chip is a telepathy product, you can control your phone, computer and other devices through your thoughts. The tech billionaire has said that initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs and therefore are unable to use different devices. Find out more.
The human brain, neurological disorders, conditions and diseases
The human brain is the most complex part of the body. It’s like a group of experts protected by the skull and fluid. The brain is transported around by the body, it contains billions of neurons that remain remarkably active when a person is awake and asleep. The brain is the home to your intelligence, an interpreter of your senses, an initiator of body movement and a controller of behaviour.
Like all the vital organs in the human body, the brain degenerates sometimes resulting in permanent, non-curable neurological disorders, conditions and diseases. Researchers say that brain diseases are uncommon and they estimate that there are about 50 million cases worldwide.
All forms of disorders, conditions and diseases are strongly connected to age but brain health is also determined by genetics, external influences, and educational and cultural factors. The most commonly known degenerative disorders, conditions and diseases are Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, chronic traumatic encephalopathy and Lewy body dementia. Also, there are different types of Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease or prion disease. Medical advances and treatments can treat the symptoms and slow down the progress of the disorders, conditions and diseases in a lot of cases.
The WHO projection that the number of people over the age of 65 who will develop brain disorders, conditions and diseases will at least double in 30 years will need to be reviewed at some point if the studies prove to be correct and brain technology advances.
Maintaining good brain health can be done through 10 simple steps.
- Quit smoking.
- Maintain healthy blood pressure levels.
- Be physically active.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Stay hydrated.
- Get enough sleep.
- Stay engaged with people.
- Manage blood sugar levels.
- Keep the mind active.
- Eat a healthy diet.
For good brain health, we recommend our product Aniracetam (AniPro). The natural product boosts your memory and mental power. It helps you think more clearly and remember more by aiding your brain’s communication infrastructure. AniPro improves the cognitive function of those with senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.
