What is Chelation Therapy?

September 19th, 2024

The origins of chelation therapy

In the early 20th century, a German chemist named Ferdinand Münz first synthesized a chemical compound called ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Little did he know at the time, he had just formulated the world’s first chelating agent. In a war-torn era of heavy industrialization, where heavy metal poisoning was becoming ever more prominent, scientists from the University of Oxford discovered that Münz’s EDTA was effective in treating lead poisoning. Development of the technology now permits chelation therapies to be used supplementally to facilitate the removal of heavy metals from body.

How chelation therapy works

Historically, chelation therapy has been administered in intravenous form, however, they are now readily available to be taken as a pill. Chelating agents bind to heavy metals and toxins in your bloodstream. The heavy metal and chelating agent amalgamation is then excreted from our bodies when we pee. The heavy metals that are typically removed using chelation therapy are:

  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Arsenic

There are two main cheating agents that are used in heavy metal removal from the body: the previously mentioned EDTA, and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). Other chelating agents exist; however, they are far more specific and are only used in niche applications.

Applications of chelation therapy

The removal of heavy metals and other toxins through chelation therapy can be extremely beneficial to human health. There are several conditions that can be treated through chelation therapy, although these are out of the scope of this blog. This blog is written to demonstrate to the reader the effect that chelation therapy can have on tackling the universal problem of aging.

We all want to age gracefully, in terms of both overall wellness and appearance. Yet, you know as well as I, that sometimes we need to give ourselves a helping hand in the endless battle against time. Chelation agents improve blood circulation by reducing inflammation in the arteries. The result of this is more nutrients such as collagen will be delivered to the skin, which will give us that skin glow and elasticity that we all desire. Other general wellness benefits that are provided by chelation therapy include:

  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Prevention of degenerative and autoimmune diseases
  • Improved sexual function

Question Answered

Chelation therapy is an invaluable component of toxicology that is used to combat heavy metal poisoning in our bodies, offering a wealth of health benefits. The anti-aging potential provided by chelation therapy can offer its users the chance to feel the confidence of their former self, through a science-based treatment plan. As the technology surrounding chelation therapy develops, new applications may be discovered alongside the refining of existing ones.

You should always seek medical advice if you or a loved one have any health concerns before using chelation therapy.
