Alpha Lipoic Acid

R-Lipoc Acid, the powerful antioxidant

March 7th, 2024

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha-Lipoic acid (ALA) is a natural antioxidant produced in every cell in the body. It is produced to turn glucose into energy, as well as attack “free radicals” – the waste products that are created when food is turned into energy and, if left unchecked can damage DNA.

Alpha-Lipoic acid is found in 2 forms: R-LA (R-Lipoic Acid) and S-LA (S-Lipoic Acid).

  • R-Lipoic Acid (R-LA) – The natural and biologically active form of lipoic acid, this is found in certain foods such as red meat, organ meat, broccoli, peas, spinach and tomatoes, as well as in certain supplements such as ATPPro™. R-LA is essential for mitochondrial function, energy metabolism, and antioxidant defense.
  • S-Lipoic Acid (S-LA) – this is synthetically produced and is the mirror-image of R-LA, but with potentially less biological activity. Research is lacking as to specific biological activities of S-LA when compared to R-LA.

The Benefits of Supplementing with R-Lipoic Acid

R-Lipoic acid (R-LA), being the natural form of Alpha-Lipoic acid, is a powerful antioxidant.

  • It neutralizes free radicals.
  • It reduces oxidative stress.
  • It functions in both water soluble and fat-soluble environments.
  • It plays a crucial role in mitochondrial energy production, converting glucose into energy. It also enhances mitochondrial efficiency, contributing to sustained energy levels.
  • It supports the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of cells.
  • It helps to protect body cells, giving antioxidant defense and neuroprotective effects, especially in conditions associated with oxidative stress.

Taking R-LA as part of a supplement routine can be beneficial for a range of health conditions including:

  • Mobility problems – R-LA has anti-inflammatory effects which contributes to improved mobility
  • Joint problems – R-LA supports joint health, which again helps overall mobility.
  • Oxidative stress – conditions relayted to oxidative stress sycg as dementia, skin conditions and asthma can benefit as R-LA has potential neuroprotective effects.
  • Low energy – as R-LA supports ATP production and boosts overall energy, supplements that contain this are often designed to support overall energy production.

R-Lipoic Acid is a versatile compound with antioxidant properties and a key role in energy metabolism. When used in supplements, it has the potential to support energy levels, protect cells from oxidative stress, and contribute to increased mobility.
