Self-care – it’s all about you

March 27th, 2026

No matter how busy life gets, skipping self-care can be costly. If you don’t make time for your well-being now, illness may make it for you later. Prioritising your physical and mental health helps you support both yourself and those you care about.

It’s a worrying world that we live in, but there are lots of steps you can take to look after yourself.

So much of life is out of our control, including the constant stream of global bad news, the cost-of-living crisis, and environmental challenges. At times, it can feel overwhelming, especially when other factors are affecting you, such as parenting, caring responsibilities, relationships, debt, or loss. It’s exhausting. That’s why it’s essential to take care of yourself – to improve how you feel in mind, body, and soul.

Pausing to focus on yourself isn’t selfish. Taking time to think and breathe can reduce stress and anxiety, shift an unwanted mindset, remove negativity, and offer a fresh perspective.

Self-care is a deliberate choice – an intention to prioritise your well-being and personal growth. It’s about nurturing yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. By consciously doing things that support a healthy and happy life, you give yourself what you truly deserve. You should make positive changes and reclaim your power.

Are you neglecting yourself?

Taking time to reflect allows you to recognise your value, build self-worth, develop resilience, and learn effective coping strategies. Are you looking after yourself right now?

Even just 30 minutes a day spent on yourself can help you process situations you cannot change, work towards your goals, and feel more motivated. It encourages you to move forward, reconnect with yourself, and make it easier to build meaningful connections with others. Self-care helps you regain your sense of control, and we’ve put together guidance and ideas to support you.

Make the time and ask yourself one key question.

“What do I need right now to feel better?”

Understanding your needs is the first step towards meeting them and all part of your self-care regime.

Start with the basics

A simple daily routine can make a big difference:

  • Begin your day with a glass of water before tea or coffee
  • Move your body with a stretch or light exercise
  • Don’t skip meals – proper nutrition supports your mood and thinking
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day
  • Take regular breaks and spend time outdoors in fresh air
  • In the evening, reflect on your day and establish a calming bedtime routine

Let’s get more specific now.

Practice mindfulness

  • Check in with yourself regularly – don’t just exist on autopilot
  • Accept that perfection isn’t realistic; growth comes from small, meaningful changes
  • Avoid comparing yourself to others, especially on social media, where reality is often filtered
  • Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings – they are valid
  • Build a positive relationship with yourself through self-affirmations. For example:
“You are braver than you think, stronger than you seem, more capable than you realise.”
  • Let go of regret and resentment where possible, and focus on self-compassion and growth
  • Keep things simple to avoid being overwhelmed
  • Set clear boundaries to protect your energy and mental space
  • Stay organised because structure can support your mental health
  • Develop coping strategies for stress, anxiety, and low moods
  • Communicate openly and honestly with those around you
  • Make time to connect and socialise
  • Build positive habits that support your mindset
  • Engage in activities you enjoy, such as reading, music, or hobbies
  • Limit excessive screen time
  • Try journaling or “brain dumping” to clear your mind
  • Consider professional support or therapy if needed

Many factors can affect your ability to practise self-care. Disabilities or health conditions may require adaptations or additional support – and that’s okay. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from health care providers.

Be aware of your environment.

Your surroundings can significantly impact your well-being. Noise, pollution, smells, airflow, and temperature all influence comfort and health. Creating a calm, well-regulated environment is especially important for relaxation.

Make positive lifestyle choices.

A balanced diet and proper hydration support both physical health and mental clarity. Medications and existing health conditions can also affect your mood and energy levels. If something doesn’t feel right, consider speaking to a healthcare professional or ask friends and family how they deal with certain challenges.

Avoid harmful substances such as recreational drugs and smoking. Reduce intake of sugar, salt, additives, alcohol, and caffeine where possible.

Physical self-care

Incorporate movement and therapies that suit your lifestyle:

  • Walking, jogging, or playing sports
  • Yoga, dancing, or Tai Chi
  • Stretching to maintain flexibility
  • Strength and endurance training
  • Breathing exercises and meditation
  • Spending time in nature

Therapies such as physiotherapy, massage, acupuncture, or other holistic approaches may also support your well-being.

Sleep is essential; aim for a consistent routine that allows your body and mind to rest and recover.

Personal care and well-being.

Looking after your appearance can also support confidence and self-esteem:

  • Skincare and grooming routines
  • Hair care and styling
  • Oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups
  • Relaxation treatments such as massages, spa visits, or saunas

While cosmetic treatments are a personal choice, focus on what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Creative and lifestyle self-care.

  • Journaling or writing
  • Arts, crafts, and creative expression
  • Gardening or spending time outdoors
  • Home improvements or creating a calming living space
  • Engaging in hobbies or collections

Even simple activities like cooking, decorating, or organising your space can be therapeutic.

Protecting your well-being.

Self-care also means making difficult but important decisions:

  • Recognising when a job or career no longer suits you
  • Setting boundaries in relationships
  • Walking away from toxic or unhealthy situations
  • Choosing what aligns with your emotional readiness and well-being

Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. By making small, consistent changes, you can build a healthier, more balanced, and fulfilling life.
